Okay, okay, okay. I hear you!
I disappeared without a note, and for this I apologize.
The explanation is that I became bored with my writing and the suburban material in general, therefore I decided to take a break in the hopes that the muse would find me again. I forgot to tell you guys; I assumed you knew but that doesn't make sense because obviously you're not in my head.
I'll be back soon to regale you with more stories from Suburbia.
More later

Fortune cookies

Tonight, the S@L Family went to dinner at a local joint called something like "Oriental Delight of China". I always enjoy the names of Asian take-out places. For some reason they feel that Americans require Asian restaurants to contain the word "China", the word "Oriental", or the word "Asia" in the restaurant name, for example, "Asian Garden" and "China Delight", "Oriental Express". What do you think they call American restaurants in China? "USA America Food?" "Hollywood America Garden"? Perhaps they just call them "McDonalds".
In any case, Zoe received her very first fortune cookie... (more)

Navel Inspection Post #21

Today in S@L-land we are examining our own navel, which, as it turns out, is not all that entertaining and thankfully does not involve photos. For entertainment, I suggest one of the many fine blogs listed on my "Fave blogs" list to the left.
For reasons I can't explain, I've been in a somewhat of a funk lately since the holidays ended. Not that I'm sorry to see them go; thought we did have a nice time and all. I think it's the whole "New Year" thing that's bumming me out. I love the idea of a clean slate, and time to think about your goals for the coming year. But this year I'm feeling...
The Holiday Post

Hi Blog. Long time, no post. Perhaps it had something to do with the craziness of the holidays. Perhaps S@L is simply getting lazy. In either case, I apologize for keeping you from peeking into the life of Suburbia At Large.

The holidays were happy ones. Not having to travel on Christmas day was both novel and divine. One taste of that experience and I can tell you that our family's mission statement will include never traveling on Christmas again. On Christmas morning Zoe came downstairs in her own home, in all of her pink-footie pajama adorable-ness to find that we'd transformed... (more)

Yankee Swap

I did not even kid myself that I would have time to purchase or bake anything for folks at the office, so I did not even bother to sign up for the Office Christmas Yankee Swap.
Oddly, even though I am, geographically, a Yankee, I had never before heard of a Yankee Swap until last year. I used to think that a Yankee Swap was some kind of baseball term, or perhaps some kind of awkward '70s suburban party activity. It also sounds a lot like Yankee Pot Roast, which is, as far as I can tell from its ingredients, is also just called POT ROAST. Then for a while I thought that a Yankee Swap was...
We are alive! And we did it! Here are some photos to prove it. The photos will not be up for long because someone may want to replicate our Mom-fabulous look without paying us royalties.
This is us, below, at the starting line at 5:45 AM. We were very nervous and very fuh-REEzing our butts off.
The statements printed on our running t-shirts are sweet, aren't they? See Mommy Run, indeed. However, the statements that were printed on our official yellow bibs began are true, though not necessarily sweet. They began as a joke.
When we registered for the race we were giddy with... (more)

Whatever happened to...?
We've been spending a lot of time at different playgrounds, and it recently dawned on me that at said playgrounds, there are no see-saws, no merry-go-rounds, and nothing accurately resembling the monkey bars of my youth. I'm sure it's safety-related, which is a good thing, but still, it's a little odd.
Also? I just learned that the term "sitting Indian style" is no longer used in pre-schools and kindergartens, at least in California. Instead, Meegs tells me, kids are directed to sit "criss-cross applesauce". I understand the reason for the original term to... (more)

Coupons. I'm just not that into them.

I read somewhere that when you have a child, there are two ways to prepare. First, walk into your local drugstore and empty your wallet on their counter. Then, drive to your local grocery store and do the same thing. Repeat both steps many times per month.
Because this has proven to be painfully true, I began half-heartedly collecting coupons. And guess what? As it turns out, I really, really suck at the coupon thing. My intentions are good. In fact, they're great. I leave the occasional coupon on the counter as if I'm going to use it, but the fact is that I just don't have it together... (more)

If any of you are prone to wondering how Fab earned his BlogName, I offer as evidence the events of our 5th wedding anniversary this weekend. After we agreed "no gifts", first, this was delivered to me at work. I love getting stuff at work. (I know. It's childish. But, um, shut up.) Second, we spent a lovely evening in the city seeing this. Then, to my utter surprise I received a gorgeous chunk of bling for my hand. Overwhelmed was not quite the word. Yes, I did tear up a bit. Of course, I had gotten him two heartfelt cards. The cards were very heartfelt. You would have been very touched... (more)
